See Bethie Read – Me Before You

I’m SO late to the party on reading this book it seems. When I was at the thrift store with Jen a couple of months ago there was a copy of Me Before You by Jojo Moynes on the bookshelf and she asked if I’d read it. I said no, and she said, you need this book.  You need to read it. It took me awhile thanks to book club books and library books and well, wasting way too much time on my phone again at night, but I finally read the entire thing and wow. What a fantastic read.

If you aren’t familiar, the book takes place in England. A twenty something named Louisa has just lost her job at a cafe she loved. Her family counts on her support so she must find any kind of job she can. She ends up being hired as a caretaker for a parapalegic named Will. Will is also fairly young, had everything going for him, great job, wonderful girlfriend and everything was taken away in a motorcycle accident. Will is moody, sullen and difficult. Somehow overtime Louisa somehow brings him out of his shell and then learns that Will asked his mother to help end his life. She makes it her mission to try and convince him to live, setting out to take him on adventures and show him he can still enjoy life.

I won’t spoil the ending for those who like me haven’t read this yet, but I will say the entire book really raises some very interesting and ethical questions. I know there is a movie out now as well and I have also heard it has some differences from the book. I may see it just to compare. I haven’t decided if I will read the sequel, After You, quite yet either as I have also heard it isn’t quite as good.

Have you read Me Before You? How do you feel about books that make you think?

  1. I feel like I also read the book way after everybody else had already read it, but I agree, I LOVED the book. It’s one of those books that actually made me cry at the end (that usually only happens when I watch movies!)
Have you seen the movie? (I haven’t yet.)
