Well, I’m going off book again today for Throwback Thursday because – it’s my blog’s 5th anniversary! Say, WHAT? Wow. I can’t believe I’ve been sharing words with the world for five years. And it’s been through many changes in those five years – names, domains, content. I never dreamed when I sat down five years ago and said, hey, I’m going to take my pictures on a daily basis and post them (started as a fashion blog if you didn’t know) where it would eventually lead me.
It started out as a way to document my outfits and try to not be so bored getting dressed for work. I called it The Fashionable Adventures of Bethie the Boo (trying to copy The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh). My first posts were quite amateurish at best! Just take a look at this screenshot from day one!
I didn’t tell anybody about my blog at first, but then realized, if I wanted people to read, I actually had to share it. So I started linking up with challenges and told a few close friends about it. And soon, people actually were reading. And my posts started improving. I met some lovely people from across the country (and Canada – looking at you Cara!) and it was fun.
Then I ended up meeting a few local bloggers, being that I was still fashion oriented, I went to a couple of “MN Fashion Blogger” gatherings and it was there that I’d meet Megan and Nora who used to write two birds, Erin of Due Midwest (formerly Babes in Thriftland) and Amanda of Tandem Vintage and they fueled my fire to really grow my blog. I continued to experiment with my style, took risks, some turned out good, some not so good. I found my love of thrifting. Then I got pregnant with Ollie.
I continued to blog outfits through my pregnancy and kind of documented my pregnancy on the blog with bump pictures. After Ollie was born though, I felt this pull to shift my blogging focus. I wanted to share more than just outfit pictures. I wanted to share my life, my thoughts, my stories and my transition to motherhood. So I started working on revamping the blog.
The first revamp was called The Melodic Stylings of Bethie the Boo, but I realized that name was still too long and still too fashion focused. Nate helped me come up with the simple “Life with Bethie The Boo.” Once I had my new name I found my new voice. I sometimes still shared fashion or style posts, but I was able to simply just blog about my life. I know I lost a few followers from the early days, but many stayed with me (and I appreciate it more than I can say). Changing my focus was the best thing I could have done, I went to a couple of MN Blogger meetups that were not fashion focused and met my people. People that I can’t imagine living without like Sara of Social Sara, Laura of One Girl, Two Cities and most importantly, my Jen from Wonderfully Unkempt. I never dreamed blogging would give me such amazing friends. These women inspire me, challenge me to be a better writer and a better person.
I went along happily writing Life With Bethie The Boo and then attended some workshops last year and found that while I had found my blogging voice, I wanted to give it one last name that better reflected that voice. That is how The Beth Next Door was born.
I’m pretty proud of my little space on the internet here. I have always said from day one, I am doing this for myself, it’s daily scrapbook of my life and if people are reading along and sharing in my life, than that is just icing on the cake. I might not make money, I might not have thousands of readers, I may not ever be published anywhere but here, but through and through I am a Blogger. I’m one voice in a sea of many, but this is my passion and I’m never giving it up. Blogger for Life.
To all of you who have joined me in this journey at any stage, thank you from the bottom of my heart. It means more than I can say.
